WHY IS ST MATTHEW'S CONSIDERED A PREMIERE WEDDING VENUE?

St Matthew-in-the-City is a neo-Gothic stone church with European and medieval features. It is regarded as the finest of its type in New Zealand and the only one with vaulted ceilings in stone.

The stained glass windows span 150 years and cover the East, West and North walls of the church.

St Matthew's has been celebrating the 'sacrament of marriage' for more than 100 years in our beautiful church.

The interior of St Matthew's is of Oamaru and Mt Somer stone with a timber ceiling in the nave. We have wonderful lighting that can be dimmed if required. Our pews are oak and kauri timber and the centre aisle carpet is dark blue.

FAQs

WHO CAN GET MARRIED AT ST MATTHEW'S?

St Matthew's is an Anglican Church that is accepting and inclusive of people of varied faiths and backgrounds. Our goal is to help you prepare a marriage ceremony that is true to your own beliefs while staying within the breadth of Anglican guidelines.

We allow ordained Ministers / Pastors of other Christian faiths to officiate, however they need to be aware of Anglican guidelines.
Civil marriage celebrants are not allowed to preside in any Anglican Church in this Diocese.

It is an excellent idea to come to a 10am Sunday service to experience St Matthew's atmosphere and hear our music.

FAQs

DO I HAVE ANY SAY ABOUT THE CEREMONY?

You may have Holy Communion, a 'Candle Lighting', or any other tradition that you wish to include; please discuss this with the clergy. Secular and religious readings are frequently used during the ceremony.

Your wedding ceremony usually takes 40 minutes. The church is opened 30 minutes before your service by the Verger. You are allocated 90 minutes in total. If you need more time, please discuss with our Events Manager when booking.

FAQs

WHAT DECORATIONS CAN I USE?

We provide a large flower arrangement at the pulpit which is done fresh each week by our florist.  It is not possible to remove or replace this arrangement and we are unable to accept special requests. You may bring in additional flowers if you like but these must be taken away at the conclusion of your ceremony.

You are also welcome to bring in your own ribbons or flowers to tie (please do not tape or glue to the wood) to the ends of the pews.

We do not allow confetti (rice, paper bombs etc) of any type inside or outside of the church,  however, you are able to use rose petals outside of the church.

Unity candles are allowed, however, we do not allow the use of other candles inside the church other than those we provide at the High Altar.

WHAT ABOUT MUSIC?

St Matthew’s is renowned for its music. Our organist is available to play at your ceremony, usually the Processional (bride walking down the aisle), the Signing of the Register, and the Recessional (the bridal couple leaving the church).

We can refer you to our own professional group of singers St Matthew's Voices. You are also welcome to have your own singers, musicians / band. If you use a band they need to bring their own sound system.

Our sound system is excellent and able to play CDs if that is your preference, nevertheless nothing is as enjoyable as live music. Please contact our office prior to your wedding to discuss your requirements.

If you choose to have a CD playing while Signing of the Register please allow 8 minutes of playing time.

FAQs

CAN I HAVE BELLS AT THE WEDDING?

We have the only peal of bells (8 bellringers) in Auckland and the tallest bell tower in the North Island. The bells add a unique dimension to your wedding at St Matthew’s. There is an additional cost of $250 for this option.

FAQs

CAN CONFETTI BE USED?

Fresh or dried rose petals are an acceptable alternative for confetti. Rice and paper bombs are not welcome. Please do not throw confetti in the church interior. Bubbles are also an option. Any questions on this can be directed to our Events Manager or on the day check with the Verger.

FAQs

PARKING?

The car park on the South side of St Matthew’s is a 'pay and display' facility. There is some street parking behind the church in Federal St also 'pay and display'. Other parking is available at the Sky City Casino, Crowne Plaza in Albert St and Civic Car Park off Mayoral Drive.

There are two disability car parks available on the South side of the church.

The bridal vehicle parks on the forecourt in front of the church. Please arrange to have these cars attended during the ceremony.

FAQs

CAN PHOTOGRAPHS BE TAKEN IN THE CHURCH?

If you wish to have your photographs taken in the church please inform the Events Manager so we allow time for this. All photographers and video camera operators must speak to the officiating minister before the service (we want to ensure that there is no interference to our sound system). This is a courtesy to both the minister and the bridal party.

Guests are very welcome to take photos.

FAQs

ARE THERE RESTRICTIONS ON WHEN A WEDDING CAN BE BOOKED?

You may book your wedding for any day of the week, with the exception of Sunday morning. We do not conduct wedding ceremonies during Holy Week (the week before Easter). The church is used by many groups and for events, so it is advisable to book your wedding well in advance to get the date and time you wish. We require a $400 deposit to confirm your booking.

FAQs

WHAT'S A VERGER AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?

The Verger's role is to ensure your special day proceeds as smoothly as possible. The Verger will open the church, take care of the sound system, guest seating, returning any items left behind and arranging and lighting the candles.

FAQs

HOW MANY GUESTS CAN ATTEND?

The pews seat 168 people. We have 200 additional chairs that can be used on request. You will need to notify us 1 month prior to your wedding if you will require the use of our additional chairs.

If you are going to have a small ceremony the Peace Chapel or the Sanctuary are two more intimate spaces you may want to consider.

FAQs

WHAT DOES IT COST TO USE ST MATTHEW'S?

The wedding fee is $1250. We do not charge a separate fee for the services of our clergy, organist, or our verger. You are also not charged for the floral arrangement. If you would like extra time (subject to availability) to conclude your ceremony with refreshments each additional hour is $250.00 + GST.  Alcohol cannot be consumed outside the church and all bottles and rubbish are to be removed at the conclusion of your event.

A $250.00 donation is payable to the Bellringers Society should you wish to have the bells rung after your ceremony.

In the event of financial hardship a discussion with our Vicar may be useful.
